With the Study & Live in your Teacher’s Home programme offered by HLI, you will live as a guest in your tutor’s home just as the name suggests. During your stay, you will be given 15 hours of one-to-one classes every week, the content of which is to be decided by you, the student. 15 hours of private classes per week is already a considerable amount of English practice, but you will also have constant access to speaking practice since you can just strike up a conversation with the teacher and their family whenever you are all together.

The school makes a deliberate effort to try to match you with a teacher and family that fits your interests and goals - in particular when the student wants to study specific subject fields, like engineering and so on. Your host family will provide you with three meals every day, so you don’t need to worry about preparing your own food while you enjoy settling into Vancouver.

By taking EC Vancouver’s General English course, you will work on each of the four broad language skills, which are: Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing. The course consists of 20 classes per week but at just 15 hours in total per week. Kaplan Vancouver offers an all-purpose General English course, intended to develop all of the main skills involved in learning a second language (reading, speaking, writing, vocabulary, conversation, pronunciation).

To make sure that you feel comfortable yet appropriately challenged, Kaplan asks participants to complete an online placement test to determine which group would be best to work in. Many schools only perform one of these tests, but Kaplan likes to conduct a new test every five weeks, to measure your progress and ensure that you’re in the ideal environment at all times.

The Kaplan Vancouver location is situated near the trendy shopping district of Alberni Street, and is also less than 20 minutes from the beach, for those who fancy a more relaxed day. The school is well-connected to public transport, so you’ll be able to get to and from your classes with ease.
