This option involves 15 hours of one-to-one classes every week with your teacher at their home in New York City. You will be provided with your own bedroom and study area, where you can do extra work if desired. One of the main advantages of this home tuition programme is that you will continue to practise your English language communication skills outside of your class schedule, since you will have to speak the language with your host family and the people of New York.

Having the advantage of being introduced to New York City by a local family is a significant aid in and of itself, as this city’s enormous size can be overwhelming for newcomers who have to figure everything out for themselves. You will be shown the best ways to get around the city, including all the do’s and don'ts that you ought to know about. No matter what hobbies or sports you might be thinking of pursuing during your time here, it’s a guarantee that you’ll be able to find it somewhere here.

Although the subway network might seem confusing at first, you’ll quickly get the hang of things and you’ll be able to get around New York City independently, using your developing English skills in places like Central Park, the Union Square Greenmarket, among so many others.

Kaplan’s General English courses are aimed at improving your core English language skills, and doing so in a way that lets you apply your English to both work and academic contexts later on in life. With 20 classes per week, you’ll improve your level in a relatively short period of time, while also having the time you need to learn how to navigate one of the most dynamic cities in the world.

You will be assessed on your current ability before you get started, which will allow the school to assign you to the appropriate group. Apart from working on the four pillars of language study (reading, writing, listening, and speaking), you should also expect your school to organise activities and days out with your peers. These activities let everyone get to know each other better, and also provide a real-life context for using the language you are all learning together.

English + NYC Discovery

The Group Experience Program lessons (15 hours per week) all take place outside the classroom, in outdoor or indoor locations all over the city: parks, gardens, indoor markets, public atriums and other green spaces. There are indoor locations for rainy days, so lessons are guaranteed every day regardless of the weather.

This course is ideal for students who do not have a lot of time to dedicate to learning but want to communicate well. Course tuition is structured as follows: 16 General language lessons, 2 project sessions and 2 lecture sessions each week.
