The neighborhood has neon-lights on shop fronts and an array of restaurants, bars, karaoke venues and more all within walking distance of the school. Genki Japanese and Culture School itself is situated within the grounds of the famous Hanazono Shrine.

Getting around the city: The Shinjuku Station is a large transportation hub in Tokyo, which is a 7 minutes walk from the school. It is a central point for many train lines, and there is an important bus station attached to it. It takes 45 minutes by public transport from the school to the centre of the city.

Attractions in Tokyo: It is easy to visit the local attractions of Tokyo from Genki Japanese and Culture School as it has an excellent travel station nearby. It takes 35 minutes by train to visit the Imperial Palace, Sens?-ji and the Sky tower are both around 45 minutes from the school and the attractions to the south of the city such as the Meiji Jingu and the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden are 30 minutes by foot.

Course structure: There are Japanese courses for short-term and long-term students, Japanese lessons that focus on understanding the culture as well as the language and a specific conversational course.

School facilities: The school is equipped for students to continue their learning outside class with a number of PCs that students can use with office applications, a study space, a book and manga library, free rental of DVDs as well as portable dvd and cd players to listen to Japanese for studying. There is free coffee and tea that students can have during their break, and a wii game console to interact with other students once lessons have finished.

School chain: GenkiJACS, as a group, currently has four schools in Japan, in Fukuoka, Tokyo, Nagoya and Kyoto. Since 2005, GenkiJACS has supplied quality Japanese language tuition and cultural programmes to students of all levels and many nationalities. Their initial success has seen the group expand steadily, regularly recognised by awards throughout the education sector, including being voted the Star World Language School of the year at the industry Star Awards in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.

Teachers and organization. The manager at Tokyo school, Demi, answered all my questions the day after the questions were sent. Everything is available, clear and fast. The teachers are all different, with their own approach to teaching.
Insider tip: In order to live in a host family, in my opinion, you need to have at least a minimal knowledge of Japanese. Approximately the level I received after 40 hours of my studies :) despite the fact that in my case the mother spoke English, it was clear that the desire to communicate in Japanese prevailed. Therefore, there was a language barrier. There is no problem with food. My way to metro took around 15 minutes, and there were 15 cafes on my route. You'd better buy Pasmo or Suica card to use public transport. This card is much faster and more convenient. Credit / debit cards are accepted at most stores, but cash is required to pay for a travel card and in almost all cafes. You have to have at least 30,000 yen with you. Regarding apartments: they are next to Ryugoku metro station, the way to school takes about 40 minutes in general: on foot and by train.

Other comments Many thanks to the school! Maybe I will come again for a couple of weeks. I did not assess the events, because I could not attend any. But it's my fault. The school organized an activity every Friday, for a small fee. Classes are OK. There is air conditioning. The building overlooks an office building and a temple, quite quiet.

The teacher were extremly friendly and gave their best to make everyone happy and answer all questions properly. The atmosphere was very nice as it felt more like a meeting point for lots of people to you hang out together.
Insider tip: Staying in school after class is nice. The school offers many activities, such as going for dinner, having a movie night or just playing some games.

Everyone was super nice and extremely helpful. You got to know lots of nice people and the lessons were full of information and didn't just scratch the surface as is sometimes the case in German schools.
Disliked
I understand the concept of "not speaking English in class", but my class and I sometimes had problems understanding the grammar and the teachers sometimes couldn't communicate it even after the lesson and (sometimes) didn't allow us to work it out together or explain it in English, which was sometimes a bit frustrating, so we all ended up having to make something up.
Insider tip: Every school event is a great opportunity to make new friends

Quality of teaching / language progress: Very good elaboration, would have liked a little more Kanji instruction
Other comments I didn't expect to find such nice and helpful employees. I have only had positive experiences.

Kanji lessons are not so useful because anyone can learn it themselves. You don't need lessons for that.

The teachers were very nice and helpful. Also, events were planned from the school on holidays that you can participate in if you want.
Insider tip: The private lessons at the school are very good. Conversationclass does not bring very much. Since you mainly only talk to classmates about some topic, which is determined by the teacher.

Quality of teaching / language progress: GenkiJACS was an incredible learning experience. I have been studying Japanese for a while but when I got to the school they quickly pointed out what level I should be learning and placed me in the perfect class with peers with similar level. The conversation class especially helped me be able to speak the language better. I felt a huge improvement in only a month! The teachers are all so helpful and nice so you really feel at ease in the classroom. All in all I would say that if you are interested in learning Japanese in Tokyo GenkiJACS is the place to be!

Other comments You should know in advance what to expect: - Classes always take place in the morning and the afternoon, personal activities can only take place on weekends. - If you have little knowledge of the language, you can only start at certain times. - Shinjuku is a badly signposted metro station, in 6 days I took 6 different routes out of the station. Without the GPS on my iPhone, I would never have found the school.

The organisation would need to know in which area the internship should be and then goes in search of something suitable. The internship can then be accompanied by a course at the Genki School.

  • Unfortunately it would not be possible to take the baby to school. We don't have the facilities to look after them and the school can be quite noisy and crowded at times, so the environment really isn't ideal for a baby. Additionally, as this is a smaller school with many classes taking place at the same time, this could potentially cause disruption for our other students. I sincerely apologize, but if you can find daycare or a babysitter for the times you come to class, we would be more than happy to have you with us.
Jessica, Sales Representative from Genki Tokyo - Apr 18, 2024
  • The course consists of 20 hours of Standard Course (from Monday to Friday) + Culture Classes (roughly 6 hours) on Saturdays.
