Key facts about Portuguese

Origin of Portuguese: Portuguese is an Ibero-Romance language derived from the Vulgar Latin spoken in the Roman Empire. It can be traced back to medieval times and the Kingdom of Galicia and the County of Portugal, and is one of the largest Romance languages today in terms of number of speakers, second only to Spanish.
Regional differences: The two main branches of Portuguese is the Brazilian and the European dialects. In many ways these two dialects of Portuguese can be compared to the differences between British and American English with the main difference being the pronunciation and phrases. The vocabulary might differ between the dialects, but this is mainly found in less frequently used words and grammar and spelling are largely the same in both dialects.
Language family: Indo-European
Native speakers: 223 million worldwide: Brazil (180 million), Angola (18 million), Portugal (10 million), Mozambique (2 million), France (1 million).
Major dialects: Brazilian (Brazil), European (Portugal), Angolan (Angola), Caipira (rural areas in the state of São Paulo and neighboring areas), Mozambican (Mozambique).
