The regions of Languedoc-Roussillon and Midi-Pyrénées were united in 2016 to create the southern province of Occitanie. Toulouse is the capital city, and the Basilique Saint-Sernin de Toulouse and the Cité de l'Espace are interesting landmarks found here. Another major city in Occitanie is the southeastern city of Montpellier, just inland from its Mediterranean coastline. This small university city is home to the Museo Fabre. To the northeast of Montpellier is the city of Nîmes, where visitors can find the Amphitheatre of Nîmes and the Maison Carrée, both Roman landmarks of Occitanie. Another popular Roman feature within the region is the Pont du Gard, a bridge stretching over the River Gardon. The South of the region is bordered by the Pyrenes Mountain Range. The Col du Tourmalet is found in Occitanie and is the highest mountain pass in the French Pyrenees.
