General English
The main goal of International House’s General English course is to enable you to have confidence when you’re out and about in the real world using English, across as wide a variety of situations as possible. This course is particularly popular with those who are staying in Malta for holiday purposes and would like to improve their level during their stay. Even so, the General course would be appropriate for learners in almost any kind of situation and is not specialised in any particular direction.
In addition to all of the grammar and vocabulary study that you will be undertaking, International House also believes that you learn best by producing language yourself in a communicative context. For this reason, you will also be exposed to a range of activities related to role plays, debates, and free speaking. Something missing from many English courses is preparation for comprehending different accents within the same language, but this is also covered in the programme - contributing to your general preparedness when using English.
General English courses are designed to give you the communicative confidence and competence to deal with everyday situations in English. This is the perfect choice if you want to learn English in Malta, combining your language course with a relaxing, fun-filled holiday. In your lessons, you will learn conversational skills, grammar structures and vocabulary, enabling you to communicate effectively in various social situations using the English language.

English for Specific Purposes
Specific course options available such as: English for Business, Medical English, Technical English and more.
In the last few years, IH Malta has noticed a change in student’s needs. As the world has become more globalised people are finding that they increasingly need English for their work. In this situation, a general English course will not necessarily provide the specific language required by the student. This is why the school has started to offer English for Specific Purposes in groups.
On these courses, students can focus on the vocabulary and grammar needed to enable the them to effectively complete professional activities in English. IH Malta offers a full range of specialist classes including business English, medical English, legal English and English for hospitality and tourism where the students will be matched with a teacher who is a specialist in the field.
The ESP group course consists of four specialist integrated skills classes where students are placed in groups with other students from similar professions. Classes cover reading, writing, speaking, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Students will improve their accuracy (how correct their English is) and fluency (how well they can communicate). The advantage of learning in groups is that the language learnt can be practiced in realistic role plays, case studies, discussions, presentations and simulation activities. In this way, English is learnt by using English not just by listening to grammar lectures and doing worksheets allowing students to achieve true communicative competence in their chosen field.

All participants in the General course will start off taking a level test that is intended to make sure that all students are placed in a group that will be appropriately challenging and stimulating for their English language skill development. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes, which is the ideal time for introducing a topic and performing some high-quality work related to that subject.
The maximum number of students at any time is 12, ensuring that learners feel comfortable speaking in English to their group, and asking their teacher for any extra help. The groups are typically smaller than those of the summer months.
The General English Course is available at 6 levels all year round: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced. Students will be placed in the appropriate level according to the results of their placement test and can move on to higher levels according to their progress. Progress tests are held frequently throughout the course to ascertain if a student is ready to move to a higher level.
Beginner Level: This is an introductory course for those learners who are starting their study of English for the first time. It provides a comprehensive language base intended to prepare even a complete beginner to move on to the next higher level. The course will cover the four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In this way, even on a beginner’s level, the students are encouraged to develop their own learning strategies. Lessons are directed in a gentle manner so as to encourage the less-confident learners but, at the same time, with plenty of practice. Successful students will be able to conduct simple conversations and have knowledge of simple English structures.
Elementary: In this course, the emphasis is on learning the communicative use of English in everyday situations and is meant to accelerate the pace at which the students achieve certain language independence. Clear objectives in these lessons give the students more conversational skills and more listening and writing activities. The course is an opportunity for young/adult clients to maximise their study time and obtain the necessary language skills to help them move on to the next grade. At the end of the course, students will be able to ask simple questions, express their needs in simple language and understand basic texts.
Pre-Intermediate: This course is a vital step towards achieving a preliminary level of proficiency in English Language communication without which students will find it hard to continue their studies. It is designed to enable students to communicate easily with each other in English and to feel at home in an English-speaking environment. The course will motivate the students to achieve a real breakthrough into the next level of study, enabling them to work largely on their own.
Intermediate: This Course is designed to help students improve their English usage and integrate those aspects of language learnt by them in the past. Course material is based on current and contemporary topics, giving the students the necessary practice to create their own personal contributions and to build up self-confidence. Essentially, this course aims to refresh and consolidate existing levels of correct English and, at the same time, introduce new skills to match the wider use of English at the next higher level.
Upper Intermediate: The aim of this course is to provide students with meaningful material that helps them to improve their fluency and practice of English in everyday use. At this level, the students themselves are ambitious enough to embark on more in-depth language assignments, such as extensive reading, word-formations and varied sentence patterns. In all cases, language items will be related to real-life situations so that students, already proficient in the use of English, will widen their communicative perspective by participating in discussions, role-play and essay/report writing.
Advanced: This course is structured in such a way as to help students achieve their full potential, stretching their capabilities in the use of idiomatic English as an everyday medium of communication. Training will be intensified in listening comprehension and in writing practice and language focus will explore analysis as well as knowledge of grammar points. The methodology in this course will be done in an enjoyable manner so as to sustain the students’ interest as they sharpen their ‘real world’ skills in vocabulary, idioms, casual conversation and academic discussion. At Advanced level, the emphasis will be on the use of idiomatic English and expressions as well as elaborate vocabulary to express an opinion both in the spoken and written language.
