The General English course is our most popular course and is designed to meet a broad range of language learning needs. You will study the systems of grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation and discourse, and the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. In the afternoons you can choose to focus on the language skills you need to improve most. The General English course is taught over six levels: beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced.

Many students take General English at lower levels and move on to higher-level courses – such as IELTS exam preparation or English for Academic Purposes – when they are ready.

The course takes place on 2 afternoons per week from Monday to Thursday. Friday afternoon is off.

After studying General English in the morning, you will be able to choose from a range of electives to take for two afternoons a week, to allow you to focus on the English skills that you most want to improve. These courses are for students who want to improve their English more quickly.

This course consists of 20 general English lessons and 10 special focus lessons per week. The student can choose from the following options: speaking with confidence, real-life listening, expand your vocabulary, and global awareness.

During the General English 30 course you will improve at a quicker pace. A combination of General English and a selection of specially focused classes will allow you to gain greater fluency and accuracy more quickly.

This course is designed to take place over 5 day trips with one hour structured lesson per day and the remainder of the day will be unstructured practise with your teacher and a registered tour guide. You will travel along the Garden Route between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth. Included in this course is; accommodation, breakfast, dinner and activities. Activities may include bungee jumping, zip-lining, walking with elephants to name a few. It is a circular route where you will depart from and return to LAL Cape Town. The itinerary is as follows:
Day 1: Cape Town to Sedgefield via Hermanus.
Day 2: Oudtshoorn Day Trip.
Day 3: Sedgefield to Jeffreys Bay.
Day 4: Jeffreys Bay – Addo National Park – Sedgefield.

Small classes and well-trained teachers guarantee fast progress. The course content includes grammar, lexis and all four skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Lessons take place in the morning, leaving enough time to explore the treasures of Cape Town in the afternoon. With no class on Friday, long weekend excursions are a must-do. Homework is given 3 - 4 times per week.

Students do either a written or verbal test to determine the best group for them to join.

All core textbooks are imported and prescribed to the International requirements for EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teaching.

The group will use a textbook and workbook but the teacher will use supplementary worksheets or readers (no extra cost to the student). Regular testing is done to determine a student's readiness to progress to the next level. Intensive English is ideal for students who want to optimise their study time. In addition to Standard English lessons in the mornings, the Intensive course includes English for Life lessons in the afternoon. These lessons will prepare students to function more confidently as they live, work and study in an increasingly English-speaking world.

Lessons are highly practical and focus on further developing vocabulary, and improving listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in real-life situations. Students will also explore topics central to 21st century life.

This course is 23 hours a week:
