What our students said about Porto

Gorgeous! I found the city safe, welcoming and cosy. Very beautiful with colourful sights and a rich cultural life. I was also pleased with the gastronomic abundance - there are numerous cafes and restaurants in the city where you can try any cuisine of the world. I would especially like to emphasise the friendliness and friendliness of Porto's inhabitants towards the guests of their city.

A very recommendable city. The only thing is that I would no longer travel there in November, as I arrived at school with wet shoes almost every day, despite an umbrella. It simply rained too often. Excursions to other cities, such as Braga or Coimbra, are highly recommended.

Porto is a multi-faceted, culturally very interesting, lively and invigorating city, but at the moment with countless noisy construction sites that hinder traffic. The metro works well, but some bus lines are extremely unreliable. Good food can be found in many places.

I like the mixture of old buildings and new attractions. It wasn't so crowded in winter. In summer it is perhaps a little too touristy. It's a shame that so many small shops and restaurants away from the pedestrianised area have been closed and abandoned.

Porto is beautiful city, the center is small enough to be visited by feet and public transports takes you anywhere. Many typical foods, and a lot of history to be discovered. Amazing view points and enough activities for different taste.

It's not the city I would like to live in. But for a stay of two or more weeks, Porto is very exciting and has a lot to offer. It's great fun to discover and experience the very different neighbourhoods.

Porto seems to me a pleasant and easy city to walk around in spite of its slopes and the pavement of some of its streets. The distances are not big. Good food. Recommended city.

It’s really difficult not to fall in love with the city. There are so many interesting things to see and do, and it’s a perfect base for daily trips to other cities nearby.

You have to "conquer" Porto. It is not as nice and warm as Lisbon right from the beginning. But the more you know the place the more interesting and gratifying it becomes.

One of the best, it is now my favourite city in Europe and I've been to many. The friendliness of people, the relaxed atmosphere and the food are exceptional.

What language school directors said about Porto

Ângela Filipe Lopes

Porto is a warm city where everyone easily feels at home. People are welcoming, food is great and the wine is extensively known throughout the world. It’s still an affordable city.

Ângela Filipe LopesDirector of Oficina de Portugues, lives in Porto since 1995
Alexander Bone

"A UNESCO-recognised "city of world heritage" and three times recently voted “Best European Destination” (2012, 2014, 2017) Porto is the perfect setting for a language course. It is full of historical monuments and places of interest ranging from the 12th century cathedral to the ultra modern museum of contemporary art - the most visited museum in Portugal. Yet its true glory lies in the incidental details: the old fashioned street cafés, the markets, the bookshops and restaurants tucked away down side streets, the simple pleasures of a tram journey along the river front or of whiling away the afternoon at a beach side café. Porto is a marvellous city to explore."

It is a relatively small school and I really liked the atmosphere! When I was there the groups were small, which made the lessons personal and intensive.
I felt welcome and at home from the start.

Very homely! The assistant Ana is very helpful. Ernesto, the director, is very friendly. Marta, the teacher, was very good! We were only 4 students in the group, from 30-70 years old! The small group size means you learn more! The teaching material was also good, as was the structure of the lessons. The location is very central in a side street of Rua de Santa Catarina, a shopping street in the historic city centre. The nearest metro station is Bolhão. I would love to come back!

The school was really welcoming and Vanessa worked so hard as our teacher. I enjoyed the classes and made a lot of progress in confidence with listening. It was a nice atmosphere in a class where I felt able to contribute.
It's very small - only 2 groups. I thought there would be a level test at the start and several groups but really just beginners and then all the rest in one group. That means in group 2 some people are out of their depth and others are having to wait while things are explained that they already know. I think people should know this setup in advance.

Information about Porto

Why Porto? Facing the big lodges of port wine to which it gave its name across the river Douro, Porto is Portugal's second largest city and there is a certain feeling of rivalry towards Lisbon. But although its ancient roots have been preserved with pride, a modern and lively commerce makes it a thriving city and its traditional importance as an industrial centre does not diminish the charm and character of its old quarters or even of the newer and busy avenues, shopping centres and quiet residential blocks. Porto affords many other attractions, monuments and museums, as well as a cultural agenda which has been steadily improving. With a well-known gastronomy and hospitable population, it is also the starting point to explore the river Douro in an unforgettable journey upstream.

Q&A - Questions about Portuguese courses and schools in Porto

  • In Portugal, we work with schools in three cities: Lisbon, Porto & Faro. Now I had a quick look and Porto is closest to Tondela/Viseu, but still 1.5 hours away. That's still quite far away. Would that be an option? The schools in Porto can also offer accommodation.

By the way, we also work with Portuguese schools in Brazil, should you want to adventure in another Portuguese-speaking country in the future.
    Robin Rebecca Pietersma, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 08, 2024
  • The courses offered by Fast Forward Institute are standard courses and students study all aspects of the language. Didactic is studying grammar and having discussions, focusing on the core components of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The course is complemented by discussions around culture, history and current affairs, films, articles, and music. A test to assess your exact language level takes place at the school on the first day of the course. Based on the test results, the school will provide all students with more details about the content of the course on their booking dates.
    Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Sep 16, 2024
  • Regarding visa requirements, unfortunately we do not offer visa assistance. It is always best to contact the embassy or consulate of the country you wish to travel to directly, as they will be able to provide you with the most accurate and up-to-date information.
    Rubén De Haro, LanguageCourse.Net - Aug 08, 2024
  • Yes, you can still go surfing in Porto and the surrounding cities in autumn. The water will be a little colder, but with a good wetsuit, it is very possible to spend a few hours on the water.
    Lisa Schiwy, LanguageCourse.Net - Jun 10, 2024
  • Yes, inlingua Porto offers lessons in the afternoon. Let us know which schedule would work best for you and we can provide you with more information.
    Ana Carolina Dos Santos, LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 11, 2024
  • The transportation fee is not included in the price and it will have to be paid by the student.
