Location: Terramare is located in the relatively small and beautiful Italian town of Orbetello, in Tuscany. Housed in the heart of the town and just a few minutes from the sea, Terramare offers a unique view into the historical, urban and natural features that Ortobello provides. Close to the school, there are several eateries and restaurants, supermarkets and a variety of shops, together with local attractions such as the Piazza Mario Cortesini. The Orbetello train station is just a 7-minute bus ride away, ensuring that students have all they need to enjoy Orbetello and the surrounding Tuscan landscapes, at their fingertips.

Methodology: A school with over 35 years of teaching and student care experience, Terramare's methodology ensures that the student is at the forefront of their learning. In conjunction with tuition within classrooms, the school believes that a didactic approach to learning, through activities and conversation with peers and professors, encourages students to develop in all aspects of their Italian language, through personal development.

Course selection: Course selection covers many of the local attributes and arts, in addition to Standard Italian courses, available to students of all levels. Topics such as Sports, Art, Archaeology, Literature, Theater, Yoga and Cuisine are available to be taken in conjunction with a student's Italian language lessons. CILS Exam Preparation courses and specific "Christmas In Italian" programmes are also popular.

“Maria is an extremely passionate and dedicated teacher. I liked the small classes which meant everyone had plenty of opportunity to contribute. Maria insisted on everyone always speaking Italian, which was challenging but certainly improved my confidence and ability to communicate. I found the additional one-hour of private lessons I had arranged made a huge difference to my progress. Maria was also extremely generous with her time in taking us on excursions two afternoons each week and one day on the weekends. This meant we got to experience things that would have otherwise been inaccessible to those of us without a car. Orbetello is a fantastic place to study Italian - a beautiful, historic town in a great location with fantastic food and lovely people who are very patient and helpful to those of us trying to learn their language.”

“Perhaps a more gentle introduction on the first day for those students who have not had previous opportunities to communicate only in Italian. It was a bit disorientating to be given all explanations in Italian from the outset, and I was sometimes unsure of what the arrangements were and afraid I had missed something important.”
Insider tip: “This is a very small school and Maria does everything herself, including the teaching, excursions, finances, administration, marketing, etc., so don't expect it to be like the bigger schools run in other parts of Italy. If you accept this, it will be much easier to make the most of the experience and the learning opportunity. Getting to and from Rome airport by taxi is very expensive (i.e. 240 Euro from Rome and 350 return) but my flights did not allow time for me to get the train (which means you need to change once and then get a bus from the train station in Orbetello to the city centre). So if money is an issue, try to arrange flights that will allow plenty of time for the train and bus, which is much cheaper. ”

Quality of teaching / language progress: I learnt a lot, although obviously with such a small school it was challenging for the teacher to manage different levels of ability amongst the students.
Other comments If I had more time, I would have stayed longer than the three weeks I spent with Terramare.

Other comments I did not like Maria not speaking clearly and taking care of her emails during the course. The afternoon activities were organised according to the mood of Maria and did not start before 3pm sometimes even 5pm: what to do from 1 to 3-5pm? We were 3 very different levels in the course, so there was little chance for me to improve.

The school organises cultural activities which take place three times a week:

- Two afternoons a week we organise cultural meetings on a variety of subjects (Italian songs, cinema, theatre, history, art and literature etc.);
- Once a week included in the General Language and Culture Course, there are trips to the local nature reserves and parks, to the islands off the Tuscan coast, archaeological sites and old medieval town centres.
