The school is located in the centre of the city, convenient for activities afterwards. The teachers are all friendly, most of them try very hard to give good lessons, are always available for questions, manage the age difference of the students (18 - almost 80) well. I liked that the classes are divided differently in conversation and grammar.
- Thank you for the small afternoon activities, they were interesting, and (also going out to eat together) helpful to get to know the other students. I only met nice people from many nations there!
- Thank you for the still cautious handling of the Corona situation.
Disliked
- In the grammar lessons, we work with a self-made book from the school, which in my opinion is very unclear and unstructured. Grammatical forms appear again and again in the exercises that are only explained in later lessons. Some teachers are able to deal with this confidently, but unfortunately I also had one who was very poorly prepared and left us alone with it. There was a placement test at the beginning, but it was never changed. I observed students who couldn't work in grammar lessons because they didn't know the basics. They were not allowed to change classes during the week, not even at their own request. For them it was very demotivating, for the others it was a challenge to their patience.
- I had one conversation teacher who motivated us to speak for the whole two lessons with a lot of joy and ideas. The other one did most of the speaking herself, basically new vocabulary lessons, which were good, but just not conversation lessons.
- A lot of time is spent writing rules and assignments on the whiteboards, I remembered my school days in the 60s and 70s. Some classrooms are only separated by glass doors, so you can follow two lessons at times.
- I realise that I have high expectations because of my own teaching experiences. If I book a language course in Florence again, I will probably do so at another school in the hope that it will be better there.
Insider tip: Be brave, even if you're over 50 or 60, no one looks at you funny here!

Quality of teaching / language progress: Even though I was not satisfied with some things and teachers (textbook, certain amount of speaking by teachers/students, flexibility in the course composition), I understand the Italian language better after two weeks of the standard course and living in the country.
Other comments I lack the opportunities for comparison

Simply great teachers. I spent 12 weeks at the school and had the chance to learn with 3 different teachers. They were all excellent, attentive and really cared that we’d do well. The teachers and the rest of the staff were also very happy to asnswer any question and assist with any need - educational or other. During my stay students mix was also very good.
Disliked
Classrooms were a bit noisy.
Insider tip: If you are into art and history, I strongly recommend you find a good podcast to help you better navigate in Florence. I personally listened to Dr. Rocky Ruggiero’s “rebuilding the renaissance”. It was great. Very knowledgeable and funny. Because it’s about a period (the renaissance) and not about Florence, you need to spend some time finding the relevant episodes, but it’s more than worth the trouble.

Very friendly, happy and competent teachers who put a good emphasis on communication, clarify all questions, explain rules and exceptions well. I was only here for a week, which I liked a lot, but is definitely too short. Ideally, next time I would book one week again, then travel for 1 week to relax and then again take a 2-3 week language course.

There is a thorough placement course. The schedule is two hours of grammar, a short break, then two hours of conversation. I think that's just perfect. The school has its own textbook. There are some typos in it, but they are easy to spot, so it is not really a problem.

The teachers were very nice and the school is right in the centre. So you don't have long distances if you want to stroll around the city after class. For me, the most important point about learning Italian was that I had the Italian language around me all day.
Disliked
The acoustics in the classrooms are unfortunately very poor. I could sometimes not understand the other students properly - for two reasons: The classrooms are not soundproof, which means: I could sometimes hear the teacher from the neighbouring classroom better than the other students in my classroom. In addition, the acoustics in the classrooms are slightly reverberant. So it was sometimes difficult to listen to the others, especially if you are not used to the Italian language. In the week I attended the course, I only learned two new grammar rules: l'imperativo and l'avverbio. The rest of the grammar rules we talked about (passato prossimo, forma progressiva, pronomi diretti e indiretti and le preposizioni) were just repetition for me. Before taking this course, I had already taken about 50 lessons online with an Italian teacher. When I compare these two ways of learning Italian (30 lessons at Istituto Il David vs. 50 lessons with the private teacher), I can clearly say: the private online lessons were much more effective and much cheaper.

Very nice and committed teachers, I had Giulia in grammar and Giada in conversation and I learned and laughed a lot. I can highly recommend the guided tour that is organized in the afternoon, you learn a lot of details that most guides certainly don't contain.
Disliked
This has nothing to do with the school itself, but if you only book one week, you should think twice about doing more lessons in the afternoon. It was too much for me, I was very tired in the evenings. But like I said, this is my personal experience.
Insider tip: You should definitely visit other places in Tuscany too, I found Lucca really great.

Quality of teaching / language progress: It was a bit long-winded, with me, another student and the teacher, two hours of conversation can seem long.

To be honest attending lessons led by the more commited teachers was pleasant and greatly increased my knowledge not only of the language but also the culture.
Disliked
Not all teachers were comitted, some of them were even incompetent, I would say. I was at the school for 3 months so I met almost all teachers and the level of the lessons varied greatly. At the end of my course we were informed that our classes will be takig place in the afternoon to accommodate other students, so basically they treated us like we were less important. I asked for a refund and was told I could only postpone the remaining lessons for later this year which is clearly a joke because who would take time off work just to have classes in normal schedule.
Insider tip: Choose a different school. In this one it can be good but it does not have to, the level of teaching varies a lot.

Other comments I do not like the fact that they treated me like I was silly, what can I say.

The lessons could have been a bit more exciting and diverse. The 4 hours of lessons per day were divided into 1.5 h grammar and 1.5 h "speaking". The grammar was good, the speaking lessons rather boring. The time almost didn't pass. It would have been good to have more breaks.
