Location: At the end of the pilgrimage known as the Way of St. James, lies the city of Santiago de Compostela with its magnificent cathedral with the Shrine of St James. Academia Iria Flavia is a Spanish language school just over 10 minutes by foot from the cathedral and is right in the core of the city. Around the cathedral is the area known as the old town and this is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a perfect way to explore the history of this ancient city and unwind from a day of learning. There is everything that you could need for your stay around the school building including shops, bars restaurants and supermarkets.

Features of the city: Along with the old town, all the local attractions of the city, such as the Museo del Pueblo Gallego and Parque da Alameda are well within walking distance from the school entrance and it is a great base to explore all that this historical city has to offer.

School facilities: Academia Iria Flavia has a friendly environment from the start and the classrooms are set up with a television for visual and auditory learning, ample natural light and heating as it is well known that comfort aides learning. The facilities outside the classroom include a lounge, a movie room and a student support desk which are all available for students to use after lessons whilst the school is open.

Teaching style: The key principles of learning at Academia Iria Flavia is communication and this is practised by the course material being intertwined with current affairs for active discussions and real life scenarios to prepare students for language used outside of the classroom. One of the main blocks to positive communication is lack of confidence and at Academia Iria Flavia there is special emphasis on building student confidence, specifically eliminating the fear of making a mistake.

Course structure: There are some really unique workshops available at the school including creation of material, cultural resources, new technologies and educational innovation as well as theatre improvisation designed for language teacher training. The school also provides a combined package of Spanish lessons and an Internship in one of the following settings: health, tourism and hospitality, electronics, beauty and teaching. There are after school activities put on by the school to support the students outside the classroom and build confidence in Spanish in real life situations.

Friendly and personable. Although I did not qualify for the class being offered during my stay in Santiago, they offered the alternative of having one on one instruction within my budget. I was completely satisfied.
Disliked
The student chair/desks in the smaller classrooms served their purpose, but they weren’t exactly what I would call my first choice. The desk surface was sloped and materials; notebook, pens, and paper would slide off.
Insider tip: Attend the special events!

Quality of teaching / language progress: I am sad that we had only 16 hours for the week instead of 20, because of a small number of students in the class. However, I found the course I have attended very efficient.

Examples of leisure activities organized by the school

Adults - Free activities

On the first day, the school invites students to a guided tour around the city, followed by a drink and a "tapa" in the old town. This activity is carried out only on the established starting dates.

In addition, they regularly offer you activities like the following:

- Gastronomic route. Discover Santiago with a gastronomic route, a walking tour that covers some 'tasty' places in Compostela.

– Route of parks: A small route in which you will see some of the most emblematic parks in the city to enjoy not only the beautiful views, but also discovering some curiosities about them.

– Spanish non-verbal language workshop: Various entertaining and playful activities are proposed to bring students closer to the knowledge of the non-verbal language of Spanish. Components of non-verbal communication are taught so that students can use them in their daily life in an autonomous way.

Adults - Paid activities

The school also organises, mainly in summer months, other activities and excursions to places of great historic or natural interest. The cost of these activities will depend on the places you visit and on the number of students registered to participate. Some examples are:

Tapas tour:
Together with a teacher from Iria Flavia School, you will take a tour around the most typical bars and taverns in the old town of the city. In Santiago, "ir de vinos" is a deeply rooted activity among people of all ages that consists on the following: you will visit several bars or taverns. We order a drink in each bar (wine, beer, soft drinks…) and you try the "tapa" that is offered. All the taverns offer free "tapas" with drinks, and each one has its speciality: pie, mussels, potatoes, meat... The price of this activity depends on how many bars we visit.

NATURAL PARK OF CORRUBEDO / BARBANZA PENINSULA

We go to the coast, where we can find some of the most beautiful beaches in Galicia (and in Spain!). We visit two places of great interest: Castro Baroña (the remains of a pre-roman village, located in a small peninsula over the Atlantic Ocean) and Dunas de Corrubedo (a protected Natural Park with some breathtaking sand dunes right in the sea-shore and surrounded by unspoiled beaches). Then we climb to A Curota Mount, where we will enjoy a view over the Galician coast line, from the Portugal border to Cape Finisterre.
