Origin of Czech: The Czech language, previously known as Bohemian, traces back to the West Slavic language as it was spoken around the 11th century. The written form of Czech was standardized in Prague in the 18th and 19th centuries and is now widely spoken throughout the country.

Regional differences: Czech is closely related to Slovak, and speakers can often understand each other across the language border. In the Eastern part of the Czech Republic you find greater variations between the dialects than in the rest of the country, and here you can clearly hear similarities with West Slavic languages such as Polish.
