Location: Spanish Center is located in the beautiful and safe Yucatán city of Merida, Mexico. The school is in the Las Brisas neighbourhood, just north of the city centre, surrounded by eateries, schools, convenience stores and local shops. With the powerful history of the Mayans and the Colonial Spaniards seen throughout Merida, students have much to keep themselves busy in a city steeped in history and beautiful architecture. Attractions such as the Catedral de Mérida, the Plaza Grande and the Mayan World Museum of Merida are among some of the city's most visited locations. Day trips to Mayan sites such as Dzibilchaltún Mayan Ruins, Chichen Itza, Uxmal and Kabah are available locally and are a must-see for anyone travelling to the area.

Course selection: Course selection at the Spanish Center includes something for students of all levels, with General Spanish courses, taught in groups, available over several intensities and schedules, all year round. Private programmes are also available, in addition to Business and DELE Exam Preparation programmes.

School facilities: The school's facilities are excellent, offering students all they need to reach their language goals in a comfortable and friendly environment. These facilities include a cafeteria, a library, movie room, auditorium, garden and a student support desk for any questions or queries that may arise.

Additional information: Merida is hailed as one of the safest cities in the Americas and has also been voted the Cultural Capital of Las Americas on several occasions.

I absolutely loved Spanish Center Merida. I signed up for 25 hours a week and also participated in a home stay for four weeks. Prior to my departure, I met with the School Manager and she answered all of my questions and helped settle any concerns I was having prior to my arrival. The school itself is small, but focuses on the education of the students. I was fortunate to have all three teachers during my time at Spanish Center Merida. Each bring a different style to teaching that truly pushed me to learn the language. I was provided with 1:1 lessons which can be both good and tough. After 4 weeks, I am confident in my conversations and understand much better than arrival. I should note, that upon arrival, I truly couldn't speak the language. I could identify some vocabulary, but by the end of my time, I was conjugating verbs and stating full sentences. It truly does depend on each person and their drive to learn the language. I would spend my afternoons in different cafes' throughout the city and work on my homework or vocabulary. Learning another language doesn't just happen overnight. It takes dedication and work. If you're willing to put in the work, not just in the classroom, but outside the classroom, you'll develop your language skills much faster.
Disliked
If learning in a classroom only and utilizing a book is not your style of learning then this is not for you. The school follows specific books to teach the language, but they truly encourage you to get out into the city and practice. That's how you'll engrain the language.
Insider tip: Take the time to explore the city and practice your spanish. Don't be afraid to ask for help and don't be embarrassed if someone helps correct you.

Quality of teaching / language progress: Semi-Intensive course was 1 hour too long for me. I ended up switching to 4 hours a day vs. 5 hours and that worked much better with my learning style.

I was at the language school for 10 weeks with the 4h per day package and am 100% satisfied with the result!
I arrived with virtually zero Spanish knowledge and within the 10 weeks we went through all the important grammar rules of the language. In combination with self-study & follow-up after class, a lot of Netflix in Spanish and conversations with Spanish native speakers in my free time, I went from virtually zero to a level where I can now hold simple conversations in Spanish for several hours. Of course, there are still some problems with conversations with several people (with a lot of slang) and with very specific topics, but with the basis of 10 weeks of Spanish course, I now feel comfortable with expanding my Spanish in everyday life and through independent vocabulary learning and active listening/speaking. Another thing that deserves special mention is that Merida as a city is ideally suited for learning Spanish in Latin America because, despite the relatively cheap cost of living, it offers security like in European countries. For example, I had a private Airbnb house with a large garden close to the school for €420 per month, including AC, water, electricity, internet, gas, etc. I was able to live in a house in Merida.
Disliked
Facilities and rooms are not luxurious and there are no fancy extras such as a private pool or the like. Everything is functional and does not go beyond the basic necessities. For the price, it is very fair and lacks nothing for learning Spanish.
Insider tip: Vegan lunch service throughout Merida for 100 pesos with free delivery: Fitorade

Quality of teaching / language progress: Perfect, more than the 4h per day would probably also be uncomfortable and too much for absolute beginners

I loved the 1-on-1 teaching with Martha, as the classes were targeted just for me and my learning level. I had a great mix of speaking, written and hearing practice and Martha is a very fun teacher.
Disliked
I understand that with only one student, excursions are hard to do. However, Martha and I made guacamole together, and in my final day, Martha and Thelma made a traditional Yucatecan dish - so delicious and I enjoyed it immensely.
Insider tip: Take the bus if you can! It’s a great way to see the neighbourhoods and so much cheaper than Uber. Also, bring an umbrella. Dedicate homework time at a cafe to focus - great food or coffee to learn with!

Quality of teaching / language progress: Martha is a wonderful teacher and tailored my 1-on-1 classes to my level. The atmosphere at Spanish Center Merida is welcoming, warm and encouraging. It was a joy to see Martha, Thelma and Jyatt every morning and share Mexican snacks.
Other comments I was lucky enough to have Martha as my teacher for 4 weeks at Spanish Center Merida. These classes were a fantastic experience and a wonderful investment in my learning. Martha is a fun and encouraging teacher, providing lots of speaking practice, as well as practice in writing and listening. I had so much support from Martha and Thelma, who helped me to navigate my way to and from the classes, and made me feel very welcome. I cherish my time at Spanish Center Merida and highly recommend them to anyone who wants to accelerate their Spanish schools with these excellent teachers.
