Positive aspects of school
Friendly teachers and staff and a familiar/open atmosphere. I had a super great host family who had a positive influence on my time in Japan.
Negative aspects
Lessons are not as effective.
No precise explanation of grammar (you learn sentence structures for certain situations, but this makes it more difficult to learn to speak independently)
