Origin of Danish: Danish is derived from the Old Norse spoken by the Scandinavian regents during the Viking Era. During the 16th century the Danish language started being used in the education and administration systems, and the first efforts to standardize the language were made. It was not until the 17th century that the written Danish language replaced German and Latin as the science and administrative language in Denmark.
Regional differences: The Danish population is highly concentrated around the Copenhagen area, and the Danish language is today heavily influenced by the majority accent Standard Danish that is spoken in this region. Many traditional Danish dialects that differ greatly from this standard accent are becoming extinct, and are today only spoken by older generations.
