Montevideo ratings & opinions

What our students said about Montevideo
A really lovely city. Very easy to live in, safe, small enough that you can walk almost everywhere- but if you don't want to walk, the public bus system is great. Beautiful architecture, friendly people, and although plenty of people speak English, nobody leads with it, making it the perfect environment for an immersive Spanish speaking and learning experience.
It is worth getting to know the city and the people of Montevideo, who are generally friendly and discreet. The point of attention is the very high cost of living compared to other countries in South America.
The building structure is beautiful, but unfortunately many of the buildings are in poor condition. It feels like everyone has a dog, but almost nobody cleans up after them. The markets are great.
I am not sure if my assessment is representative: In Montevideo it is still early spring and pre-season, many places are still closed.
Very pleasantly surprised by the many green spaces, parks, good restaurants and bars as well as a very cool old town centre
Love it! Will definitely come back to Uruguay in the future, maybe even move here. That's how much I liked it
Interesting but expensive, I think the city is a bit dirty.
Unfortunately very dirty, a pity for this lovely city
A great diverse city full of history

January 2025 - February 2025Every year the streets of Montevideo echo with the sound of murgas and the candombe drums during the up to 40-day long carnaval. There are dance parades and outdoor stages and carnival here has a very different flavour than in Brazil.

24 August 2025One of the biggest popular events of the Montevidean year, La Noche de la Nostalgia is basically a big excuse to have a party and dance the night away to the hits of yesteryear.
October 2025The Día del Patrimonio is a fairly recent event in the Uruguayan calendar. The first one was held in 1995. A great opportunity to visit government buildings, museums, palaces and other places of historical or architectural interest which are open to the public to commemorate the day.
