Experienced teachers, mediateques (you can see french movies with sub titles, there are many work books or audio text which you can use free of charge). In this school you can have a contact not only with foreign students who learn French but also French students who learn English, Spanish and German. It's something very unique of this school. You have many chance to speak in French with ordinary French people. (not only teachers or somebody who works in the shops)
Disliked
internet acces is very expensive (4 euros / h)
Insider tip: Royan is a very small town, so it's a bit boring town but for those who want to improve his capacity of French, it's one of the best locations. You must not miss the party at Pub Astoria on the first Tuesday.

Other comments In the beginning, I chose 4 weeks. But I found this school being so good that I extended my cours. There was another Spanish girl who did the same extention. Information for Japanese student: There were not many Japanese student in this school when I was here. (Only 4 students) If you look for a school where there are not too many japanese students, it might be a very good choice. There is a chance to introduce our culture to other students, so it is very nice idea to bring something (photobook, food) to show.

I especially liked the activities outside class. For example, I went to the welcome reception for new students in the nearby Irish Pub "Astoria" and was able to quickly establish contact with French people. For me it was important to practice French. The school also offers English courses for French .There you can find also very easy language partner
Insider tip: Astoria and many other excursions.

The mix of nationalities (on average about 80 students from 20 nations) and ages (approx. 21-60 years). A good value for money. The city of Royan is not comparable to places like Nice, Paris, Bordeaux, but there are many possibilities for activities, and during the week, it is easier to focus on the lessons than in the above mentioned places.
Insider tip: The horseback ride through the forest next to St. George de Didonne is also great for beginners who have never even ridden before!

Other comments My accommodation in a host family was a bit grubby but my hostess was very friendly, helpful, and a good cook of the French cuisine! Also, she talked a lot with me, so I would absolutely recommend to stay with a host family. However, you should be prepared that the idea of cleanliness and order may be different than your own.

Cheap, residence in front of the school, studio TV used by the students (it's really funny!), beaches, classes with projector... Very very, professional... someone told me that it was one of the two best language schools in France, I really think it.
Insider tip: If you want to pass the DELF, you CAN do it in the school in one day, one day simulation test a week, a lot of parking, very good teachers ... I think for a Spaniard with a car, who wants to take the DELF it is the best value for the money in France (I've been to three different schools).

The lessons were a great mix of speaking, listening and reading comprehension and grammar. Due to the direct correction and the large number of international classmates, I could easily improve my knowledge of French.

Friendliness of the staff, small numbers in the class and individual attention given to each person. Location: Royan is a picturesque seaside town small enough to get around on foot.
Insider tip: I had 1 week only, would recommend at least 2 weeks to consolidate what you have learnt. Take advantage of the extra activities organised in the afternoons after school.

I liked the classes generally. I felt the teaching was very good though unfortunately most of our time at Carel was not spent learning French.

I did not like the activities, which I felt spent much too much time doing nothing. Further, French was not spoken during them to the extent that it was difficult if one did not speak much English or Spanish.

Other comments The Erasmus accommodation was awful. It was filthy on my arrival. I had to go to the supermarket to buy cleaning products as the surfaces were black with dirt. The bed was really a matress on the floor. There was a disgusting smell coming from the fridge and mould growing around the shower curtain. I even wore flip flops in the shower. I tried to spend as little time as possible here.
School's reply: We have had an exceptionnal problem with some flats last summer which had been occupied for a previous period of 7 months and which have not been checked out in due time, thus leaving not enough time for thorough cleaning by the janitor. Please note that the mattress does lay on a low support and is not placed directly on the floor. Otherwise, flats in our residence are always cleant before arrival of students. A lot of our "back-comers" do ask for accomodation in the residence again.

Insider tip: Make sure you're given a proper introduction to the school facilities - because only I and one other student began on the first day of my course we didn't receive a proper introduction and it took me a week to work out what facilities were available and how to access them.

Other comments The school teaches in a very formal way - it isn't interactive and doesn't support those who are struggling. Each student is expected to take care of their own needs. I fell between two levels and was put in the higher class which I found difficult and demoralising.

Other comments The school did not offer all levels and did not inform me that my level was not there. I was put in a lower level which obviously did not contribute to a significant progress in my French. I was completely left alone in my free time without any supervision from any adult even though I am only 14. My parents didn't like it, of course.
