Position in Cairo: Ahlan is found in the Islamic Cairo district of the city. It is to the north of Cairo, and filled with eateries, souvenir shops, spice stalls, tea vendors as well as lots of historical artefacts and mosques. The school is to the south of the area, a 10 minute walk from the Khan el-Khalili bazaar.

Moving around Cairo: The school is on a main street in Islamic Cairo, and there is a bus stop minutes from the school entrance. Bab El Shaariya metro is the closest station to Ahlan and this is 15 minutes away by foot. The GL3 line stops at this station and has stops close to the main sights of Cairo.

Main features in the city: Just down from the Khan el-Khalili is the Al-Azhar Mosque. The Salah Al-Din Al-Ayoubi Castle and Mosque of Muhammad Ali are both south from Ahlan, and take around 40-60 minutes by bus depending on the time of day. From here, students can also visit the Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan, which is a short walk from the Castle.

Course structure: The school has group lessons for standard Arabic as well as the local everyday use of the language in Egypt. There is even a combination course where students can learn the difference between the two. Private package lessons are also available at Ahlan.

School chain: The Ahlan schools all stem from the Ahlan World group. They have several schools throughout Egypt, Jordan, Morocco and Italy, teaching Arabic, at all levels, to the highest of standards.

The Ahlan philosophy outlines their approach to teaching. Their view is that learning a new language is not merely learning how to spell or speak that language, but also learning about the cultures surrounding the language and its history. Many Ahlan schools offer extracurricular activities, including local seminars, initiatives with local organisations, and weekly activities and excursions.

Ahlan means welcome, outlining how all Ahlan schools strive to make students feel welcomed whilst studying with them.

The other students were by far my favorite part of the experience. Very international and relatively young (~22-25). Although a bit more expensive than Egyptian hostels, I would recommend a room at Ahlan. At least there are no employees from the school living in Orabi St. and there is a very relaxed atmosphere. People do a lot together, help each other with homework (yes homework) and there is the possibility to walk to school together in the morning.

Other comments The quality of the teaching is very good. All teachers (mostly female) speak good English and are very competent. The only drawback is that at Ahlan you always have the feeling that the school wants to make an extra profit. In summary, they offer Egyptian service at European prices. Sadly, neither the teachers nor the local management are well paid. Would also advise against organized tours with Ahlan. Prices for buses and hotels are doubled (literally) and there is hardly any co-determination. If possible, just organize something with a few students. Living and traveling in Egypt is extremely cheap.

The commitment of the teachers and their high level of expertise.
Disliked
The terrible quality of materials and textbooks, or rather the lack of them. The textbook I received was not only badly photocopied (half of the texts illegible), but also lacked Arabic letters for the most part. The school does not offer any materials, texts that you can work on at home and translate yourself.

Quality of teaching / language progress: They have really nice teachers. And they really teach well. But the manager named Bahaa is horrible at managing the school. Not serious, plays loud music when we are having class. And always jokes around even though we are talking about business which I think it is really offensive, he doesn't take me seriously when I am trying to be very serious. But other than that the teachers are really nice.
Other comments Get rid of the manager who is never serious.

Questions and answers about Ahlan

  • Yes, our partner school in Cairo offers Arabic courses all year round.
    Sawsan Zein, LanguageCourse.Net - Oct 16, 2023
  • Unfortunately, there is no intensive course for absolute beginners in Cairo, but you can choose the standard course with 15 lessons and add a few private lessons in the afternoon. This is no problem and very effective!
    Lisa Schiwy, LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 22, 2024
  • The school offers Modern Standard Arabic Intensive 25 lessons per week, 5 daily lessons of 55 minutes will take place from 9:00 till 12:00. The maximum number of students per class is 8 students.
    Sawsan Zein, LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 26, 2024
  • Winter is the off-season and therefore teachers can pay more attention to each student by monitoring their progress and having a personalised teaching approach for each of them.

In high season, there are many more groups and peers (from May to September).
Francesca Convertini, Administrative Coordinator from Ahlan World Jordan - Dec 02, 2024

FAQ about Ahlan , Cairo

  • For accommodation, the school only offers shared flats (for a minimum of 4 weeks), there are no host families.
Madly Simba, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 11, 2023
  • At Ahlan, if you opt for a 4-week course with 20 lessons per week, you will have completed 80 hours, meaning you have pretty much completed A0 and are officially no longer a beginner.

If you already have knowledge of the Arabic language, or some feeling for it, or already know a language similar to it, this will speed up your progress.

Private lessons are also highly recommended, as you will have a moment with the teacher to focus on your personal sticking points and special goals. Even one private lesson will make a difference. Your progress in the group course will also accelerate as a result, as you will understand the material faster.
Robin Rebecca Pietersma, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Mar 14, 2024
  • Please note that even though there are usually many groups with different levels, the school cannot guarantee the presence of a fitting group for higher level students. They will have a better grasp closer to the starting date. If no group is formed, then the student will have private lessons. But not to worry, you will still interact with other students during the breaks and during the school activities.
Madly Simba, Language Travel Consultant from LanguageCourse.Net - Apr 23, 2024
